Historically, it would seem that the eleventh through sixteenth centuries were the "Golden Age" of castle building in Europe. Some were built before or after that time, but most date to that 500 year period.
The earlier medeval castles were built on hills, so it would be harder for people to attack, but the later castles had huge stones walls around them so here was no need ( the earlier castles were called the Motte and Bailey)
