The Miami Indians are people who lived long ago in the forests which are now houses and buildings. They were driven out of Indiana by the white men which did not like the Indians because they thought they were taking over the land. So, today we do no longer have Indians in this state.

The tribe today known as the Miami people called themselves Myaamiaki, meaning "downstream people" or Mihtohseeniaki, meaning "the people". They originally occupied lands in the areas that became Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois.

They had several component sub-tribes, including the Wea and Piankashaw

The Miami tribe has no connection at all with the place name of Miami in Florida, which is named for an unrelated tribal group (the Mayaimi).
