Croatia is due to become the 28th member of the EU on 1st July 2013.
Five more countries have applied and are recognized as candidates by the EU:
- Turkey (Membership application submitted 14 Apr 1987, Candidate status granted 12 Dec 1999).
- Macedonia (Membership application submitted 22 Mar 2004, Candidate status granted 17 Dec 2005).
- Iceland (Membership application submitted 16 Jul 2009, Candidate status granted 17 Jun 2010).
- Montenegro (Membership application submitted 15 Dec 2008, Candidate status granted 17 Dec 2010).
- Serbia (Membership application submitted 22 Dec 2009, Candidate status granted 1 Mar 2012).
Croatia's membership negotiations ran from 3rd October 2005 to 30th June 2011.

∙ 15y agoI know that Turkey wants membership but the EU doesn't want to admit it because it is largely a Muslim state and it would provide an influx of cheap labor into the EU which would in turn lower wages for the average EU worker. Croatia and Macedonia are also candidate countries

Why migth some European countries not want to join the eu?
