The 6th amendment of the United States Constitution provides Americans the right to have a lawyer present if you have been charged with a crime. It has more recently been determined that if you cannot afford a lawyer, a court appointed lawyer will be provided.
The Sixth Amendment provides one the right to an attorney. For those who can't afford an attorney, the US Supreme Court case of Gideon v. Wainwright allows individuals who can't afford an attorney to have a court-appointed attorney.
The 6th gives you the right to a speedy trial, a lawyer, and the right to confont your witness.
