25 of the 43 presidents, including the current President Obama, were members of the bar and qualified to practice as lawyers. Some of them, such as Jefferson, John Quincy Adams and Woodrow Wilson, had a very limited practice.

(Obama is known as the 44th President, but only 43 people have been President. Cleveland is counted twice, as both the 22nd and 24 presidents.)

As of June 2014, we have had 44 U.S. Presidents. Of those, 27 worked as lawyers before entering political life. This leaves 17 who were not lawyers. Nine former presidents were U.S. Army generals.

Out of 43 presidents, 25 have been lawyers. It also helps to have government service on your resume -- 17 governors, 15 senators and 19 members of the House of Representatives have become president... 16 senators after the 2008 election is complete.

Only six actually had law degrees:

Rutherford B. Hayes - LL. B. - Harvard Law School

William Taft - LL. B. - University of Cincinnati Law School

Richard Nixon - LL. B. - Duke University School of Law

Gerald Ford - LL. B. - Yale Law School

Bill Clinton - J.D. - Yale Law School

Barack Obama - J.D. - Harvard Law School

The very first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln was a lawyer. Andrew Johnson, a tailor by trade was the Vice President to Lincoln and became President himself after Lincolns assassination. Ulysses S. Grant a career military man became the 18th President but the following seven Republican Presidents, listed below, were all lawyers.

II.) Rutherford Birchard Hayes

III) James Abram Garfield

IV) Chester Alan Arthur

V) Benjamin Harrison

VI) William Mckinley

VII) Theodore Roosevelt

VIII) William Howard Taft

Taft was followed by Warren G. Harding who studied law but did not like it and was a business man before becoming President. Harding's vice-president and successor on his death, Calvin Coolidge, was a lawyer, who was then followed by Herbert Hoover, a mining engineer. The next Republican President elected was Dwight D Eisenhower who was not a lawyer but a military man but the next Republican President elected was Richard "tricky Dick" Nixon a consummate lawyer. Gerald R Ford was a lawyer but Ronald Regan was an actor although not a consummate actor and both of the Bush's, father and son, were businessmen before entering politics.

In total there have been 18 Republican Presidents since Abraham Lincoln was elected. An astounding 10 of those eighteen Presidents were lawyers.

Only six earned a law degree from a law school

Rutherford B. Hayes - LL. B. - Harvard Law School

William Taft - LL. B. - University of Cincinnati Law School

Richard Nixon - LL. B. - Duke University School of Law

Gerald Ford - LL. B. - Yale Law School

Bill Clinton - J.D. - Yale Law School

Barack Obama - J.D. - Harvard Law School

(Several others were admitted to the bar by passing the bar exam. In fact, the law degree is a relatively new idea. The J.D. degree is even newer.)

Adams, Jackson, Van Buren, Tyler, Polk, Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan, Lincoln, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, Cleveland, McKinley, Taft, Wilson, Coolidge, Franklin Roosevelt, Nixon, Ford, Clinton and Obama were all admitted to the bar and so were licensed to practice law. However, Jefferson and Wilson did not practice law and John Q. Adams only practiced for a short time before he got into full time diplomatic and political work.

In addition, Madison, Theodore Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson and Harry Truman took some law courses but did not take the bar exam.
