He played himself in the war movie "To Hell and Back," which featured the song "Dogface Soldier." That's the official song of the 3d Infantry Division--Audie Murphy's outfit.

Audie Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor, the top US decoration, as well as the Distinguished Service Cross, 2 Silver Stars, the Legion of Merit, 2 Bronze Stars, 3 Purple Hearts, and Frances' top decoration the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor among others. During WW2 Murphy served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. Audie Murphy grow up a poor sharecropper and was small in stature. He joined the US Army very young and later worked as an actor. He reluctantly portrayed himself in 'To Hell and Back', a film based on his autobiography.
