Alessandra Volta, the Italian physicist is known as the inventor of the first battery in 1792. But centuries later in 1936 an Archaeologist found a piece that predates the invention of the electrochemical cell (battery) by more than a millennium. the piece was a clay jar that had one iron rod and one copper plate within its body, and sealed by tar or some kind of nonconductor preventing the two metals from having a physical contact. the signs of corrosion on the body of both metal indicates that the jar was filled with some type of acid (vinegar or . . ) most archaeologist believe this was nothing except an electrochemical cell. this ancient battery , which is being considered as the first battery belongs to 240 BC during the Persian dynasties of Parthian or Sassanian. during the 74 years of studies (1936 to now), there are many theories about what could be the possible use of a battery at that time (2,240 years ago). among all the theories , the most logical one indicates that although the Parthian battery (known also as Baghdad battery) could only generate a little more than a volt (1 V), but it was sufficient to be used for electroplating metal objects by gold or silver. if correct, this discovery opens another chapter in the history of electroplating technology.
