Asian giant hornetAn allergic human stung by the giant hornet may die from an allergic reaction to the venom, but the venom contains a neurotoxin called mandaratoxin (MDTX),[6] a single-chain polypeptide with a molecular weight of approximately 20,000 u,[7] which can be lethal even to people who are not allergic if the dose is sufficient. Each year in Japan, the human death toll caused by Asian giant hornet stings exceeds that of all other venomous and non-venomous wild animals combined, including wild bears and venomous snakes.

The largest bee in the UK is a bumblebee, bombus terrestris. The queen is 20 to 22 mm long and can weigh as much as 0.85g. Workers are from 11 to 17 mm long; and the drones are 14 to 16 mm long.

The largest in the world appears to be bombus eximius, from southern China. The workers are 11 to 16 mm long (slightly smaller than B. terrestris), but the queens are up to 30 mm long, with a wingspan of 56 mm.
