Straight through ethernet cable (CAT 5/5e/6)
Typically this is a straight through, UTP copper cable.
To connect like-to-like devices you always use a crossover cable. Otherwise you will use a straight through cable.
It all depends on the interface of the switch but switches commonly use ethernet cable, most commonly Category 5 or 6 (CAT5 or CAT6).

Ethernet Cross over cable
Crossover Cable (T568A on one end, T568B on the other)
Straight Cable is used to connect a device to a different type of devices Eg: PC to a Switch PC to a Hub Switch to a Router E.t.c. Cross Cable is used to connect a device to a similar type of devices Eg: PC to PC Switch to Switch E.t.c.
PATCH CABLE Patch cables provide a short-range connection, while longer Ethernet cables (usually Category 5, Category 5e, or Category 6) are used to connect to a hub up to 100 meters away.
straight cable is needed when connecting two computer periperhals. A cross over is used when connecting a computer to a network hardware (router, swirch, etc..)
tpatch cable is also known as straight cable and mostly connected same devices or nodes. but on the other side cross cable is just different then patch and used to connect different devices. Hem Gurjar
How can I configure straight through cable?
The Ethernet port is used to connect a computer to a connectivity device such as a modem, router, switch, etc. Does so via an ethernet cable.
cross cable
To connect two devices of the same type together. e.g. You would use a crossover cable to connect a router to another router, a switch to another switch or a computer to another computer. If you are connecting diferent devices together, such as a router to a switch, a straight through cable should be used.

In ethernet terms, a straight-through cable connects a client device to a hub, switch or router (straight-through meaning the connection is pin-to-pin, the opposite of a cross-over cable, which connects RX-TX and vice-versa).
You need a crossover cable you want to connect two computers without a switch. If you want to use more than two computers (with switch) you have to use a straight pair cable. ---- Ethernet (up to 100 Mbit) communicates on four of the eight wires available. Two of the wires are used to transmit data, and two are to receive. Wires 1 and 2 transmit while wires 3 and 6 receive. With this in mind, on a straight through cable the wires are in the same position on both ends of the cable. On a crossover cable the wire that is in position one connects to position three on the other side, and the wire in position two connects to position six on the other end.
