The South African government between 1948-1994 imposed laws of strict racial segregation in order to maintain White Afrikaner minority rule over the Black majority population of South Africa. Under the apartheid regime, many Human Rights violations were made (as were raised by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission) and this prompted the United Nations to impose sanctions on South Africa to try and force a change in policy.
