The Falklands/Malvinas' sovereignty is still in dispute, although the British has kept a settlement there for longer than any other country that claimed the islands (France, Spain, and later Argentina).

Britain. The Falkland Islands have been under British control since the 1830s. In 1982, Argentina's military forces invaded and occupied the islands for a few weeks, but British forces re-invaded and fortified the islands.

The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory under the sovereignty of the United Kingdom. The islands have been under British control since 1833, with few brief respites.

The sovereignty of the archipelago is disputed by Argentina (the Falklands are known as the Malvinas to the Argentine government), who claim the territory based on historical precedent. This dispute led to the Falklands War in 1982, where Argentina invaded the territory but was subsequently repulsed by the British.

In the latest referendum conducted in 2013, the people of the Falklands voted overwhelmingly (99.8%) to remain a British territory, with 91.9% turnout and only three voting against (0.2%). The Argentine government rejected the results, saying it could not recognize the will of a "transplanted" population. The British government, meanwhile, refuses to discuss the question of sovereignty with Argentina without the express consent of the Falkland people.

The self-governing islands are under both de facto and de jure administration by the United Kingdom, who is generally recognized as representing Falklander interests in foreign affairs.
