The Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact simply fell apart. Primer Gorbachev took a vacation to the Black Sea. While he rested in his Dachau, three men tried to take over the government of the Soviet Union. They called for the army to assist them. The tank drivers refused to fire on the people. At that point the republics that made up the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact realized that if they declared their independence the Soviet Army would not invade them. At that point they became independent republics.

Other factors had been radio and television from the west. The border had never been completely sealed. Fishing boats smuggled in a lot of goods and magazines.

Russia has a large Muslim population that must visit Mecca. We consider Arabia backward. They saw paradise.

Smugglers boats constantly ply the Black Sea.

Russia had hard cash stores that only took western money. The average Russian could not buy good merchandise in them. Only someone with Dollars, Sterling, or Deutsch Marks could shop there. Only officials.

The average citizen knew he did not live in a workers paradise. He was not willing to fight to keep the system going. He was ready to stand up to the military.

Thus, when the military approached the parliament building, thousands of citizens stood in front of the tanks. The tank drivers were not willing to kill to preserve the system. The people were willing to die to destroy it.
