I just bought a Bat Flower too (his name is Bruce) and found out from the distributor that the flat part is actually the roots and that is what goes down.
The crown (the round part) will figure out how to grow up on it's own. My was bent down a little and the kind lady assured me that it will figure out which way is up.
Another thing she told me (she was so kind) was that it really like orchid mix for potting soil. It doesn't like to sit in water so good drainage is a must. I'm keeping mine inside in a pot cuz I live in Michigan and the temp goes up and down more than a brides nighty. Thank you Len Goodman.
She said to make sure it gets plenty of sun, which suprised me. Of all the research I could find, everything suggests that it likes shade. I have an orchid that I've had for 5 years now and it loves my South West window. I'll put Bruce there and see if he enjoys it too.
Good luck with your Bat Flower.

If you hold a leaf and let it go in the wind, the direction the leaf is blown is down wind. Thus if you turn to face in the opposite direction you are facing up wind. This means that if you are down wind of an animal it will be up wind of you.
