Yes- each gamete cell is haploid, containing half the mother or father's full set of chromosomes. when the two fuse, then a new diploid cell is created, with a full number of chromosomes- half from the mother and half from the father. It has a new genetic combination- the cells of offspring created via sexual reproduction are not genetically identical to their parents' cells.

Sexual reproduction involves taking some (half) of your DNA and mixing it with another's DNA. This mixing allows for mutations to be passed on, as well as diluted.

In organisms that do not sexually reproduce, the only way for variation, and not clones that have the same defects as the parent, it to recombine DNA. Even so, there isn't a ton of variation.

Variation allows for a defense against an ever-evolving environment. It is a safety in numbers concept.

First, crossing-over and the subsequent rearrangement of alleles on homologous chromosomes leads to gameteswith a new mix of genetic material. Second, when the gametes fuse, new combinations of alleles result.

What is the creation of new combinations of alleles called?

Recombination

When can new combinations of alleles be generated in a zygote?

In meiosis or a genetic mutation.

How can new combinations of alleles be created when genes are linked?

New combinations of alleles can be created when genes are linked through a process called crossing over during meiosis. Crossing over occurs when homologous chromosomes exchange genetic material, resulting in the mixing of alleles between the two chromosomes. This process leads to the creation of new combinations of alleles and contributes to genetic variation in the population.

What results in the exchange of allels and produced new combinations of alleles?

Crossing-over

Are mutations the only way to add new genes to a gene pool?

yes. independent assortment and crossing over in mitosis will add new combinations of alleles to the DNA but only mutations will create new genes.

Are new alleles made by natural selection?

No - natural selection does not create new alleles. Variation in alleles needs to exist in the population in order for natural selection to occur. Natural selection will involve the change in allele frequencies over time, but it does not create new alleles. New alleles are the result of mutations.

Sexual reproduction creates a new combination of alleles.

Which of the following creates new combinations of alleles along one chromosome?

Crossing Over

The new combinations of alleles produced by crossover events help to generate genetic?

The new combination of alleles produced by crossover events help to generate genetic diversity. This is because the offspring are different from the parents.

What stage new allelic combinations might form?

During the final stage of meiosis, alleles may form new combinations. This is known as crossing-over or meiotic recombination.
