Christianity was declared to be the official religion of Rome by Flavius Theodosius in 380 A.D. However, there is some important history leading up to this declaration.

As Christianity was just beginning to get on its feet, Christians did not face intense persecution within the Roman Empire. Widespread persecution actually did not start until approximately 250. However, under Diocletian (who reigned as emperor from 284-305), the persecution grew extremely intense. This period is referred to as the "Great Persecution."

Immediately following this was the reign of Constantine. Thus, the conversion of Constantine (311/312) was a huge turning point for Christianity and its relation to the Roman Empire. Christianity became a legal religion and, with the exception of Julian the Apostate, every other emperor until the fall of the Roman Empire professed to be a Christian. In 380, Theodosius formally ended his support for the traditional Roman religion and declared Christianity to be the only legitimate imperial religion.

Thus, while the official declaration of Flavius Theodosius in 380 A.D. was an important point in history, probably a more significant turning point would be the conversion of Constantine in 311/312.
