In the end, it's a matter of opinion, but Star Wars is bigger, more advertised, has more movies (6 as opposed to Lord of the Rings only 3) and is popular with most ages.
Middle-aged people saw it "when they were kids", kids saw "that show on Cartoon Network", and well not as many saw Lord of the Rings.

∙ 11y agoGreat success! Tolkien's masterpiece soon became very popular and was made into a movie by Peter Jackson. Peter Jackson's film was also a great success and the extent of the film was perfectly staggering.
The great work will always live on in the hearts of true fantasy lovers.

And it appealed to millions of people. Its a classic tale of Good vs.Evil. Even hippies loved it (mainly because of the so-called anti war message and environmentalism).

Specifically, the characters Obi Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker are very similar to the Iliad heroes Odysseus and Achilles, respectively. If you look more closely at the two stories, you might find more in common.
