Before it falls it has gravitational potential energy. While it falls, the potential energy gets converted to kinetic energy. Part of this gets dissipated by friction - mainly converted to heat. Once it hits the ground, all the energy will be converted to heat.

No. Kinetic energy is moving energy. A book on a shelf would be considered as potential energy. Potential energy however can turn into kinetic energy and back again. The formula for potential energy is PE = m*g*h. m = mass; g = acceleration of gravity; h = height relative to where you measure it from (traditionally the ground). If the bookshelf is exceptionally tall, the book has a lot of potential energy while if it is very short, almost to the point of being on the ground, it has very little.

Why does a book on a high shelf have more potential energy than on a low shelf?

Since potential energy equals mgh. When h, height increases potential energy also increases. If h is 0 then p.e is 0/

How much kinetic energy does a book have just it hits the floor?

Just about as much as it had potential energy before it started falling - since most of the potential energy will be converted into kinetic energy. The exact amount depends from how high it falls.

What is the definiton of gravitational potential energy?

Gravitational potential energy is a type of energy that an object possesses because of where it is placed in a gravitational field. The higher the object the more energy it has, so if you had an object that was on the ground and then you put it on a high shelf then it would have more energy when it is on the shelf.

What is the potential energy of a 5 kg object sitting on a shelf 3 m high?

PE = m x 9.8 x h:So, 5kg x 9.8 x 5m = 245 joules potential energy.

What are the two ways on how to reach a book in the library?

Basically, you reach for a book in the library with your hand. So i suppose the two ways are; 'standing on the floor' or 'standing on a ladder' if the book is on a high shelf.
