Halloween was pretty much the same in what you did. They would scare people with their costumes not monsters though and they used pumpkins to make jack-o-lanterns, because they were more readily available then turnips.
People being cheap and lazy.

The Irish and English immigrants brought the tradition of Halloween to the US in the mid 1800s.
People dress up in costumes, go trick or treating, give out candy, decorate our houses, and go to parties. Some people in the U.S. don't celebrate Halloween though, for religious reasons.
It is the regular Halloween that the rest of us Americans celebrate.
