The Trail of Tears involved many Native American groups, specifically many members of the Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw nations, among others.

The Indian Removal Act of 1830 allowed Native Americans to either integrate into the culture and government of the US, or be allowed self-rule only if they moved out of established states onto Federal Land. Those who chose not to assimilate were the ones that were involved in the Trail of Tears.
