Ozone in the atmosphere can either be stratospheric (high level) or tropospheric (ground level). Stratospheric ozone is reduced by the presence of chlorine ions from CFCs. This impact can be reduced by limiting the amount of CFCs produced, used or lost. Ground level ozone is due to atmospheric down washing of stratospheric ozone by winds passing over mountains (which we can do nothing about). It is also produced by the action of ultraviolet light on a NOx/hydrocarbon mixture in the atmosphere. These can be reduced by reducing the emissions to these compounds from human activities.

Human beings are largely responsible or share a part in the depletion of ozone layer in the stratosphere.

Some of the activities which have led to this depletion are:

  1. The use of enormous amount of CFC's in various forms such as the aerosol cans, refrigerators, deodorants, air conditioners etc.
  2. The rockets or jets which fly in the stratosphere release a number of gases which in turn can deplete ozone.
  3. Because of the ever-growing industries all over the globe the amount of greenhouse gases which are released from these industries account for the greenhouse effect which is indirectly related to the ozone depletion.

That said, a recent edition of Time magazine stated that the 20+ year ban on chlorofluorocarbons has been effective, and the "hole" in the ozone layer at the South Pole has largely closed. An environmental disaster avoided in time by conscious effort of man. Score one for environmental responsibility.

A:CFCs and related halocarbon gases (all man-made) are the main cause of ozone depletion all over the world. CFCs released from Western countries take several years to reach the stratosphere where the ozone layer is. During that time winds spread them all over the world. In the presence of ultraviolet light these gases release chlorine and bromine atoms which destroy some of the ozone in the ozone layer. This is called ozone depletion. A:Pollution. Smog, Vehicle Emissions, Aerosols Sprays, CFC's from styrofoam & plastic. Burning of Hazardous or certain chemicals that produce CFC's . A:
  • Rockets into space poke holes in it.
  • Aircraft cause it to thin.
  • Combustion exhaust and cooling towers cause it to thin.
  • Older refrigerants cause it to thin.
  • Cutting down forests causes it to thin.

How will the ozone layer depletion be catastrophic?

The ozone depletion will be catastrophic. It is because it will cause human race to extinct.

Can carbon dioxide cause the depletion of the ozone layer?

Carbon dioxide can cause the depletion of ozone indirectly. It is due to the global warming which then causes ozone depletion.

Is global warming a factor that cause ozone depletion or a result of ozone depletion?

Global warming and ozone depletion are not related.

Cause of ozone depletion?

Ozone depletion's main cause is CFC gases which are pollutants are responsible for the depletion of ozone layer. CFC convert ozone to oxygen and make it useless for the absorption of UV radiation.

How depletion of ozone layer occurs?

Depletion of ozone occurs at the poles. CFC's cause it.
