Brass instruments (Generally speaking) are easily distinguishable in that they generally look "brassy" ie they are made of metal. Examples include trumpets, trombones, french horns, tubas.

An exception to this rule is the Saxophone, although it is made of metal and has a brassy shine, it is played using a reed to produce the sound, thus it is actually a woodwind instrument.

In actual fact, a brass instrument is defined by the way the sound is produced by the instrument (A buzzing of the musician's lips into it), not by the material it is made of. So a huge wooden digeridoo is technically a brass instrument!
