The Four Noble Truths are:

  • All life is suffering
  • All suffering is caused by desire
  • There is an escape from suffering and desire
  • The escape is the Eightfold Path

Anything that is not one of the above is not one of the Nobel Truths.

Buddhists believe that they are all true and are all true for all people. The Four Noble Truths are:

1. Life is full of suffering

2. There is a cause for this suffering, and we believe that it is due to attachment (desire and ego).

3. That suffering (not pain) can be overcome.

4. There is a path that leads to the end of suffering.

In reviewing these four statements:

  • Point one is demonstrably true. People suffer all the time, no one is totally free from sadness, disappointment or the sense that "things could be better".
  • Point two is simply that suffering must have a logical cause.
  • We know 3 is true because there have been people (Buddhists and non-Buddhists) that have overcome suffering. One was The Buddha.
  • If 1 -3 are true and some have overcome suffering, then there must be a way for to move from suffering to non-suffering and we can all utilize it

As for #3, there is an old saying. Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional
