Omega-3 is better than 6. omega-3 fatty acids are very important for our heart health, fish is the most traditional source of omega-3 but recent research says the green-lipped mussel oil from New Zealand is also a rich source of omega-3. Some brands like TURNER New Zealand doing a great job to provide this oil for our consumption in the form of capsules supplement. I can say it on the basis of my personal experience, I consume TURNER GLMO to fulfill my Omega-3 requirements.

Their differences lie in their chemical structure and their roles in the body. Basically, the omega-3s have anti-inflammatory benefits and help prevent Heart disease, whereas omega-6s lower blood cholesterol and support the skin.

Omega-3 is fatty acids found in salmon and flaxseed that help to reduce levels of inflammatory hormones called cytokines.

Omega-6 is fatty acids found in many cooking oils that tend to raise levels of these very hormones.

If you eat omega 3 and omega 6, then you will be balancing your levels of inflammatory hormones. People mostly eat more omega 6 and fewer omega 3 which can cause joint pains, heart disease, and muscle loss.

From the view of a nutritionist an Omega-6 fatty acid is one that is found in abundance in the U.S.A., in sources such as soy, corn, and other plant oils. Omega-3's are less abundant in the American diet and can be found in fatty cold water fish, walnuts, and flaxseed.

From a biochemical point of view, Omega-6 and -3 refer to the carbon atom on which the double bond is placed from the omega, or last carbon. Six signifies that the bond is six carbons in from the last carbon; three, the bond is three in.

This chart does a decent job of summing it up:

They're both good for you, but in the right ratio. We have drastically descreased our intake of omega-3, and increased our intake of short-chain omega-6 (mainly in the form of vegetable oils, which should be replaced with olive oil). It is important to have the right balance; an excess of one type over the other can have a detrimental impact upon health.

The ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is 2:1, and sadly the average modern diet is out of balance at an average of approximately 25:1.

Omega 6 fatty acids help to reduce inflammation when taken in large amounts?

Omega 3 reduces inflammation. Too much Omega 6 can cause inflammation. The best source of Omega 3 is krill oil. I'm a runner and it helps with endurance.

Structurally how do omega-3 fatty acids differ from omega-6 fatty acids?

Like many organic compounds, the names of fatty acids such as omega-6 and omega-3 contain numbers that are used to describe the position of certain features of the molecule. In the case of omega fatty acids, the numbers 3 and 6 tell where the final carbon-carbon double bond is located. The numbers tell how many carbon-carbon bonds away from the carboxyl group this bond is. Omega-6 fatty acids are generally regarded as unhealthy when eaten in larger quantities than omega-3 fatty acids because they interfere with the omega-3's functions in the body.

Where does omega 3 and omega 6 come from?

There are many sources of omega-3 and omega- 6 comes from but in adding some omega-3 rich food we can get this from omega oil also. Some foods like fish and other seafood (especially cold-water fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, herring, and sardines), nuts and seeds (such as flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts) plant oils (such as flaxseed oil, soybean oil, and canola oil). Well, I am also using vegan omega oil from Free Spirit Group which is very affordable cost and I suggest this for all.
