Windows 7:

  • is a lot faster and has higher performance than Vista.
  • has Touchscreen and multi-touch input
  • has a new taskbar, which is slightly larger, and has a nice 'jump menu' when you right click the taskbar icons.
  • has a lot more 'fat' removed, taking up less space on your hard drive.
  • 'Aero Peek' turns your windows invisible (when you mouseover another program on taskbar or show desktop)
  • has a simple devices page which you can use to handle all of your peripherals in one place.
  • has fewer User Access Control warnings
  • Updated tools (mspaint, calculator, etc).
  • Windows 7 has more speed, since it uses much less resources. I also find it that its compatible with more things than vista was. Some games I played on Vista, are working even better on Windows 7.
  • The gaming experience is better on Windows 7.
  • Vista and Windows 7 are very much alike, but you will find Windows 7 has a lot of fixes for the bugs Windows Vista has, and the resource use is much less, making your Operating system even more efficient.
  • Windows 7 is even more organized, since it uses little tabs at the bottom to organize your open windows, this is very helpful if you usually have a great amount of windows open most of the time. makes it a lot better, because you will not have a crowded task bar anymore.
  • Windows 7 stops responding a lot less than Windows Vista.
  • Windows 7 basically took the speed and efficiency of Windows XP, and then took the awesome look of Windows 7, put those two things together, and created Windows 7. It also took the indexing idea of Windows Vista, so you can use the Start Search bar to always find what you are looking for.

Windows Vista:

  • is much cheaper than Windows 7
  • has the best version Windows Movie Maker (v6.0), which isn't available for Windows 7 (only v2.6 is)
  • has a little more compatibility with outdated programs (but it is a very tiny difference)

Microsoft has published a paper comparing the various features and outlining the differences between Windows XP SP3, Vista SP1 and Windows 7. The PDF file can be downloaded from Microsoft's website.

Windows 7 is nearly identical to Vista, but with many "fit and finish" along with performance and usability improvements. For example, the graphics engine uses Vista's then-new engines to render your desktop using your Graphics Card, which reduces CPU and memory use while boosting reliability (the old-style GDI graphics system used in XP and prior versions was buggy and the leading cause of crashes).

If you've used Windows Vista, you'll be right at home in Windows 7. If you haven't, I recommend skipping Vista for 7's cleaner and faster interface.

Why is Windows Vista worse than Windows 7?

Since that is an opinionated question i am assuming you want some opinions why vista is worse than 7. First, vista is not as user-friendly. Second, the windows sidebar (or "gadgets") use a lot of electricity, so a laptop battery did not last long with it enabled. Third, windows 7 has superior speed. Fourth, 7 has a much cleaner, less cluttered interface than vista. Fifth, windows 7 is much more stable than vista. And finally, there is a good reason that they gave up on vista and made windows 7. Any simple Google search will tell you that.
