According to the Tamil literature, there are many cities of which Madurai seems to be the most popular & powerful. However, the same Tamil literature also complain about ancient kadatkols (what we call now as 'Tsunami') - which over a period of several hundreds of thousands of years, reduced their original landmass - as they say. Because of these ancient tsunamis, we read that Madurai was shifted three times from its original location. So, if we follow the literature, it may well be that the original Madurai had submerged long back & is lying beneath the waters of the Indian ocean, waiting to be discovered.

Scientific basis:

However an underwater city has been found off the coast of Tamil nadu (South Eastern India) which was called as Poompuhar in Tamil literature, these findings were popularized by researcher Graham Hancock with his research work in circa 2002 (May, 2010: watch his very important interview by following the link provided below in the Sources and related links section).

Until then, Poompuhar was considered as myth & mocked at, similar to how Troy's existence was considered as myth until it was discovered & found to be true. Hancock estimates that the ruined underwater city might be at least 9,500 years old or closer to the last ice age (10,000 BC), when ice melted to raise the sea level, which would account for the disappearance of many other ancient port cities & civilizations around the world (like ruins found underwater off the coast of Cuba in Gulf of Mexico, Yonaguni ruins near Japan, new underwater ruins near Alexandra, Egypt, etc).

But sadly, there has apparently not been much interest from either the Indian or Tamil nadu government to research it more to discover the hidden past.
