Presently, Jainism is believed to have originated in India. But according to some recent findings, very old Jain idols (many of which are pre-vedic) have also been found in Pakistan, Myanmar, Central Asia and Java islands. Thus, it is actually difficult to tell whether or not Jainism actually originated in present day India.

Jain scholars believe that there is no person as such who founded Jainism. It has been present from infinite time and it will be present for infinite time. For each time frame (kaal) there are 24 Tirthankaras. For the current time period, Rushabha muni was the first Tirthankar and Vardhaman Mahaveer was the 24th tirthankar. Many people think that Jainism was founded by Mahaveer and it was offshoot of Vedic Hindu religion. But this is certainly wrong. Jain is as old as any of the India's oldest religion.

Many vedic literature mention about Jainism and its tirthankaras. In fact there were many religious concepts (such as being vegetarian) adopted by Vedic Hindu followers from Jainism. But both of these religion has a lot of similarities too like Karma, reincarnation, etc.

To answer your question, I will say Jainism was flourished in India when the 1st Tirthankara Rushabadeva was ruling in the north part of India. This time period is before the Ramayana. Because as per jain literature 10th tirthakra and Rama belonged to the same time period. Rushabha's son named Bharat was very powerful king of that time. So, the name 'Bhaarata' was given to his regime, presently called India. Before that India was known as Jamboodweepa or Aryavarta (home of Aryans).
