The Langshott Manor Hotel was built around 1580 as a manor house. It is located just outside of Horley and has housed members of the Royal family in the past. It's current owners bought the property in 1997 and continue to transform it back to its former glory.

On 14 August 1861, William Landsborough organise a relief expedition from Brisbane to find the missing Australian explorers Burke and Wills. On 16 August 1861, South Australian John McKinlay departed Adelaide to search for the missing Burke and Wills expedition. On 22 August 1872, the Northern and Southern sections of the Overland Telegraph Line, crossing the Australian continent, were joined. On 24 August 1872, Queensland's borders were extended to include Thursday Island and the Torres Strait islands. On 9 August 1890, the first recital was held on what was then the largest pipe organ in the world, the Grand Organ in the Sydney Town Hall. On 20 August 1908, the first successful Australian transcontinental motor car journey was completed. On 20 August 1908, the 'Great White Fleet', consisting of 16 new battleships of the Atlantic Fleet, sent around the world by US President Theodore Roosevelt, arrived in Sydney. On 27 August 1908, Australian cricketing legend, Sir Donald Bradman, was born. On 31 August 1933, the township of Stuart in the Northern Territory was renamed Alice Springs. On 5 August 1944, Japanese prisoners at Cowra, New South Wales, staged a breakout in which 4 Australians and 234 Japanese were killed. On 17 August 1980, two month old Azaria Chamberlain disappeared while on a family camping holiday at Uluru (Ayers Rock), Australia, resulting in a huge investigation that led to the wrongful imprisonment of Azaria's mother. On 13 August 1989, thirteen people die in the world's worst hot-air balloon crash, near Alice Springs in central Australia. On 2 August 1997, three days after the Thredbo landslide disaster, skiing instructor Stuart Diver was pulled alive from the rubble of the collapsed Thredbo resorts.
