The Sun appears at its southernmost point in the sky, making its path from sunrise to sunset shorter than any other day. It will remain at this point for a few days (most say three) and then begin to move north again.
The opposite day to this would be the summer solstice, when the northern hemisphere is the closest to the sun so the path is longer, making it the longest day of the year.
Some have argued this is the reason for so many "Sun God" rebirth stories being similar like those of Jesus Christ, Horus Krist, Apollo, Sol, etc. They all die around this time and are reborn after a period of time (usually three days). It could also represent the birth of Jesus as the day when the Sun would have started moving north back in those days would have been the 25th (the solstice being on the 22nd + 3 days).
