Paul McCartney was involved in a minor traffic accident late in 1966, when the motor scooter he was riding struck a light pole. He suffered a cut on his upper lip, which left a scar; he grew a mustache while the scar healed. The other Beatles also grew mustaches, to cover up the coverup.

Later a rumor emerged that McCartney had died in a car accident, caused by a pedestrian he'd given a ride to "freaking out" when she realized who was behind the wheel. This was given weight by the line "He blew his mind out in a car", in "A Day In The Life"; the line was actually about Guinness heir Tara Browne, whom The Beatles had met socially.
