In botany and plant anatomy, true fruit is an expanded ovary. examples are peaches and mangoes. This means an apple is not a true fruit because they are an expanded fruit stalk. The hard apple core is the true fruit because it is derived from the ovary. The expansion comes because they are swelled by soft tissue to both protect the seed and provide nutrient for the young plant. This soft tissue is called albumen.
