Pope Benedict XV was pope from 1914 to 1922. He organised extensive relief services for prisoners of war and for the victims of the war's devastation, raising around 5 million dollars, but was unable to use Vatican funds as these were already depleted. He had invested almost all of the Vatican's financial reserves in the once very profitable securities of the Ottoman Empire, but with the empire about to dissolve, the securities had lost much of their value.
