Fort Du Quesne (the original French name) was built in 1754 at the point where the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers merge to become the Ohio River, and was perceived as important for controlling the Ohio Country. A highly successful trading post was in place from the 1740s.

What are the three rivers in Pittsburgh?

The Allegheny, the Monongahela, and the Ohio. The Allegheny comes down from NY and is the North-eastern most tributary of the Mississippi. It's navigable by small boat for most of it's 300+ miles and is used for recreation along nearly all of it as well as for coal transportation along a great deal of it's southern waters. The "Mon" comes up from West Virginia, flowing North out of the the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It's navigable it's entire length from Fairmont, WV to the Point (where it meets the Allegheny to form the Ohio). The Mon is the sight of some amazing American history. The valley around the Mon was the sight on the Whiskey Rebellion, was the birthplace of the Steel Industry and is today experiencing a rebirth as a place for recreation and economic revitalization. The Ohio is formed at Pittsburgh's "Point" which helps shape the Golden Triangle making Pittsburgh an unmistakeable and stunning skyline. The industrial history of Pittsburgh lead to the Ohio being a very polluted and dirty river as late as 15 to 20 years ago but the shuttering of industrial polluters and the focused clean-up of dedicated groups like Friends of the Riverfront have lead to the Ohio's rebirth as a great recreational river. Fishing, boating, waterskiing, kayaking, and even swimming are now not-uncommon in the Ohio near the Point and farther south. When the the Mon and the Allegheny Rivers meet to form the Ohio it flows all the way to Cairo ,Illinois where it flows into the Mississippi River. When the Mighty Mississippi then flows into the Gulf of Mexico . Two thirds of all the water is that which came from the Ohio.

What state does the Ohio river border on the southern side?

No, Kentucky owns it. It was just named the Ohio River because tons of people in the late 1600's came down that river to come to Ohio so that's why its called the "Ohio River" but Kentucky officially owns it. But Ohio owns the whole bridge. -Hope this helps!-
