No. Insect (and thereby butterfly) development knows four stages; egg, larvae, pupa, adult. The caterpillar is the butterfly's larva. The pupa is the chrysalis, the immobile hanging thing in which the larva (caterpillar) changes into the winged adult (butterfly). ^^

All metamorphing insects do the same, including for example flies (egg, maggot, pupa, fly) and bees (egg, larva, pupa, adult, but in the hive so you don't see!).

Do caterpillars eat a lot before the pupa stage?

Yes

What occurs during the pupa stage?

I'm not certain that this is always the case, but I heard that most caterpillars will go into a comatose state, as their body liquidates. They release a bunch of chemicals into the liquid caterpillar mixture which direct the reassembly process that ultimately results in a butterfly or moth.

Do All Caterpillars Make a chrysalis?

Moths make a Cocoon, and butterflies make a chrysalis. But I do believe that all caterpillars (that make it alive) must go through their pupa stage.

What a pupa of butterfly eats?

Pupas do not eat. The pupa is a caterpillar, in a state of dormancy, completely encased in a cocoon. During this stage they do not eat, drink, or move at all. They grow wings, legs, and other parts to become an adult butterfly. Because they can't eat in their pupa stage, caterpillars eat massive amounts of food to have plenty of stored energy before they become encased in their cocoon.

What is the stage in life cycle wherein the insect are at rest?

How are caterpillars and butterfly's different?

Caterpillars and butterflies are different because the caterpillar is the out side of a butterfly. It may sound silly but a caterpillar sheds 6 times, four times as a caterpillar , once when it makes a pupa. When the butterfly hatches from it's cocoon it is really shedding it. Caterpillars are different because caterpillars are the early stage of the butterfly.

What is the Stage after pupa?

The next stage after the pupa is the adult...... because when insects are born they are called magets.......then pupa.......then adult it is the cycle of insect life.

What are pupae?

I know a lot about this, because as a little kid I raised mealworms to beetles. They start out as a worm, or the larvae. When it's time for them to mature, they make themselves a pupa, which vaguely resembles a cocoon. They imerge as fully grown beetles.

What is the importance of larva stage?

the larva stage stores up alot of energyfrom the food it feeds on and uses the energy for the pupa stage during which it does not feed.
