Many states have a provision that allows the Governor to nominate or appoint a state supreme court justice, or to make a short-term appointment that is later approved or rejected by voters.
The state that Samuel Chase represented was Maryland. He served as Chief Justice in Baltimore until he was chosen by President Washington to serve on the Supreme Court.
Four years. Sandra Day O'Connor was elected to the Maricopa County Superior Court, in Arizona, in 1975 and served as a judge there until she joined the Arizona Court of Appeals in 1979. O'Connor remained on the state Court of Appeals until President Reagan nominated her to be the first female Supreme Court justice in 1981. Justice O'Connor retired from the US Supreme Court in 2006, and was succeeded by Justice Samuel Alito.
The head of a state supreme court is called Chief Justice, just like the head of the US Supreme Court.
None of them is particularly controversial, although Justice Sotomayor, who was most recently appointed to the Court, raised criticism from conservatives prior to her confirmation. On the other hand, Justice Alito, who joined the Supreme Court in 2006, recently drew criticism from the progressives for muttering during President Obama's State-of-the-Union Address. Supreme Court justices are typically dignified and don't often involve themselves in scandal.
