West Virginia
Kentucky is further east than Mississippi.
Maryland
Take a look at a map: parts of Virginia are west of the state of West Virginia. When it was removed from Virginia and made a separate state in the Civil War, West Virginia received that name because it was on the western side of the Appalachians.
The Mississippi is over 1800 miles due WEST from the State of Virginia. Virginia is a Middle Atlantic State and is often considered part of the South. The Mississippi River cuts through the Midwest States, almost cutting the USA in about half east to west.
The states due east of the state of Mississippi is Alabama, and farther east are Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
