Religion was a way of life that governed people from birth to death. In those societies, most people believed quite strongly in their faiths and it was a popular institution, not just regulated to clergy. There was minimal freedom of worship and a strong degree of inequality between religions. While in the Islamic World there was permission for Non-Muslims to worship, there were still many restrictions associated with this. In Christendom, Jewish worship or worship by other sects of Christianity was generally outlawed or strongly regulated.
