If you literally mean to ask what death penalties are, the term means that someone is sentenced to die, as the punishment for some crime that they have committed. However, you may have meant to ask what are the crimes punishable by the death penalty. These vary by state, but they include high treason, multiple murder, or other exceptionally bad crimes.
