How was the medieval period different from the modern period in Indian history?

The medieval period of Indian history starts with the eighth century A.D. and ends with the eighteenth century A.D., when the British became major players in Indian history. the eighth century to the thirteenth century is held to be the early midaeval age, which saw the emergence of Telugu, Hindi etc. and the beginning of the bhakti movement, and the thirteenth to the eighteenth centuries is held to be the later medieval age, which saw Islamic cultural influence in every walk of life, through the Sultanate and Mughal periods. However, some treat only the later medieval period as the medieval period and the early medieval period as a part of the ancient period.

The middle ages began with the decline of the West Roman Empire, which took a long time, and so really has no fixed date. Similarly, they ended with a long series of events that are more emblematic than anything else.
The middle ages are a time dominated by questions about religion. I would not say they were dominated by the Church, because the Church was often dominated by kings or emperors, and was often disunited. But clearly, during the middle ages, people thought a lot about religion, and religion was probably the single most powerful motivating force.
But the middle ages were not times predominated by ignorance or brutality or filth. They were times of recovery from the collapse of the Roman system, which started in the third century and continued into the sixth.
There was not a lot of literature from the Early Middle Ages, but that should not be taken to mean they were an illiterate time. The Byzantine, or East Roman, Empire started a system of primary schools in 425, which they spread and continued to operate until 1453. The oldest schools in the UK were opened in the sixth and seventh centuries, but there are records of older ones that were closed during the sixteenth century. The oldest secular school in the UK dates from the year 700. And the middle ages are the time in which the first seventy universities were founded.
Nor were the middle ages a time without science. The list of medieval inventions is long and impressive. They include such things as the invention of the chimney, soap, and ultimately, the printing press.
