∙ 14y agoLightening travels at the speed of light, which is about 165,000 miles per hour, whereas sound, such as thunder, travels at the speed of sound in dry air, is approximately 1,127 feet per second or 768 mph (1,236 km/h) at 68°F (20 °C). Look in Wikipedia, under Thunder.

∙ 13y agoNothing travels faster than light in a vacuum and sound can't even travel in a vacuum.
In air light travels almost as fast as it does is a vacuum: 300,000,000 m/s. Sound travels at about 330 m/s in air.
Light is very quickly attenuated by some materials (ones you can't see through), but sound travels well through solid materials.
So the answer depends on the material. There's even the equivalent of a sonic book for light when an object is accelerated faster than light, called Cerenkov radiation.

Sound is a compression wave that travels via then vibrations of particles. If the particles are closer together then the wave (sound) moves faster. Particles are closer together in a liquid than a gas, therefore sound travels faster through liquids.
