Many others come from intermediately hard water areas, for example barbs and rainbows. The best solution in a community tank is to go for moderate hardness, as it will best accomodate most species.

Tropical fish include fish found in tropical environments (found close to the equator) around the world, including both saltwater and freshwater species. The term tropical fish refer to only those requiring fresh water, saltwater tropical fish referred as marine fish but to be accurate Saltwater Fish are truly tropical fish.

The most notable location for this is south America and most of the different types of fish from there will do very well in soft water. These include tetras, plecos, all sorts of south American catfish, angelfish and other south American cichlids, freshwater stingrays and discus.

What if you put dragon fish angelfish catfish and goldfish all in one tank?
In all probability they will die. Some catfish (there are hundreds of species of catfish)are cold water fish and others are tropical so I can not say about that. The only fresh water"Dragonfish" I know of is the Gobie (Gobioides broussonnetii) and it is definitely a very tropical fish and a very hard to keep little fish at that. Angel fish would handle the same conditions as the Gobie but Goldfish are a coldwater fish and certainly would not handle the conditions that the Angelfish and the Gobie require to survive.

The African Cichlids from lake Malawi need very alkaline (around pH7.8)and hard water but the Amazonian fish like the Discus need the opposite very acid water around pH5.8 and very soft. A- i would go there marine fish are SOFT!!! you wont need to change the water and everything. you cant get a fish called 'clown loaches' which arent tropical and they don't eat snails too!!
