There were several important events that took place during the Progressive Era. Two of these events were the passing of the Homestead Act and the first Transcontinental Railroad.
Council Bluffs, Iowa/Omaha, Nebraska (via Ogden, Utah, and Sacramento, California) and Oakland, California.
The final spike was driven in at Promontory Summit, in (what is now) Utah on May 10th, 1969. It was solid gold, thus was immediately removed and is now in a museum.

The two companies that worked on the transcontinental railroad were the Union Pacific and Central Pacific. The Union Pacific started at Omaha and the Central started in CA.
The Transcontinental Railroad began in San Francisco, California and ended in Council Bluff, Iowa. Three private railroad companies joined forces to make it happen. They were the Western Pacific Railroad, the Central Pacific Railroad of California and the Union Pacific Railroad Company.
The Federal government paid the two railroad companies that built it by granting them sections (one square mile) on alternating sides of any tracks that they built. The railroad companies could do whatever they wanted with this land and often sold it off. Many other western railroads were later funded the same way.
