He is referred to only as The Time Traveller and by personal pronouns. I cannot fathom out why Wells made the all-important lead character anonymous. It could not have been to merely add suspense, which the tale has enough touches of the unknown to begin with... it does not grok.

∙ 13y agoFor some bizarre reason the lead character- The Time Traveler, like the Oz monsters or The Lone Ranger- is anonymous. this cuts into any sort of realism and makes conversation difficult and romance practically out of the question. It makes for sort of heavy-handed He, He, He, associated with Caesar"s Campaigns or Biblical language ( an excessive use of AND has the the same effect). I have no idea why Wells did this. if the guy invented the device- surely he had a name. Other characters are the essentially Good Guy ruling class Eloi and the malevolent but industrious Morlocks who steal his Time Vehicle early after he lands in the futue- this is something like a plot in Annie about a lost valley of prehistoric people who among other things, confiscate the lead character, Amelia Santiago"s helicopter, early in the saga ( how do we get out- well follow the narrative_ her CIA copter had a tracking device- and boyfriend Major Raoul of the Southern Command was able to home in on it. that"s Annie- not Time Machine- the vehicle confiscation was part of the plot.
