There were 6 essential characters that were very important to the story line of the play as well as the movie "The Phantom of the Opera"

-Christine: a girl that went through alot. At a young age she lost her father and grew up living in an Opera house in Paris. From then on she grew up to be a performer in that same very opera house as a Ballet dancer and later on as the main role. From the very beginning of her stay at the opera house a voice comes to her and enchants her. She believes that it's the angel of music and later finds that it is The Phantom himself. Which in the end turns out to be a huge problem when she reunites with a long lost love interest Raoul.

-The Phantom: a quiet, misguided soul who asks attention and love. As a child he was treated horrible and ended up having to run away from people trying to kill him because of his deformity. He too, then had to grow in the opera house. From all of his solitude and anger he grew mad and evil. He then fell in love with Christine and was obsessed with wanting to make her known. So he coached her and controlled her every move to ensure that he got what he wanted. On this journey he killed a few people.

-Raoul: was a rich, young man and a love interest of Christine's. They grew up together but later parted ways until they reunited again and instantly fell in love. He ended up willing to die for her love and in the end it payed off.

-Meg Giry: One of Christine's closet friends. She is a very talented ballet dancer and the daughter of Madame Giry.

-Madame Giry: The strong, independent woman who brought both the Phantom and Christine to live in the opera house. She was also the keeper of the truth that not many people believed. Many played with the fact that the Phantom actually existed , but she knew for a fact and also knew what he had planned for Christine. Many times had she tried to warn everyone. They just never seemed to listen so she watched out for her own held them close in fear that they two might be in the way of the Phantom and what he truly wanted.

-Carlotta: She is the stuck up, selfish snob who wanted everything her way. So when the Phantom wanted Christine to take the lead role and Carlotta to play as a silent role as the page boy, she refused and cost many peoples lives by doing so.
