In Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird," the mockingbird symbolizes innocence and vulnerability. Characters such as Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are considered mockingbirds because they are misunderstood and unjustly treated by society. Atticus Finch warns his children that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they do nothing but make beautiful music for the world.

Boo Radley has always symbolized good, therefor Boo is like a mockingbird. The mockingbird is explained as only doing good, singing for everyone, and Boo is just secluded in his house but he does no harm to society.

There are a few mockingbirds in this book. They include Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. Atticus also is a mockingbird. Miss Maudie attributes to this idea when talking to Alexandra about how the case affects Atticus's demeanor.

The two people in the book who are referred to as 'mockingbirds' are Arthur 'Boo' Radley and Tom Robinson. They are both referred as this because they both are innocent. Arthur has never harmed anyone, and yet suffered by being forced to stay locked up by his father. Tom is accused of raping Mayella, which he never did. it was Mayella's father, the town drunk, who raped her, or so the author made it seem.

There are 3 main mockingbirds in the novel;

1 - Tom Robinson - He did no harm to anyone and actually helped Mayella but because of his race was literally killed by the community who falsely found him guilty of rape.

2 - Boo Radley - Boo, like Tom, never harmed anyone but was victimised by the community because he was a recluse and different to everyone else.

3 - Atticus - Atticus always treated people fairly and should have been a role model to the community, yet he was ridiculed him for standing up for what was right and defending an innocent man.

Hope this helps :)
