The early Muslims regarded any other faith that believed in the abrahamic God as special, referring to its members as "People of the Book". The Book was The Bible.

People of the Book were granted a status in society next in line after Muslims and were not required to convert to Islam.

Islam originated in Arabia in the early 7th century. Islamic texts depict Judaism and Christianity as prophetic successor traditions to the teachings of Abraham. The Qur'an calls Jews and Christians "People of the Book". They were permitted to keep their religious traditions as second-class citizens in the Islamic Empire. As for how Muslims regarded them, it depended on the person and the regime in question. The Almohads and Safavids were brutally repressive whereas the Spanish Umayyads and the early Ottomans were quite open and accepting.
