The Diamonds were from Toronto, Canada (most American teens of that era had no idea), and in rock and roll's formative years, they had a number of American top-40 hits. Another thing most American teens didn't know was their hits were often "cover versions"-- white versions of songs originally sung by black artists. The reason for cover versions, sad to say, was many top-40 stations wouldn't play a song if it sounded "too black," so a number of white singers recorded those songs in a style that was supposedly more mass-appeal. In 1955, the Diamonds got their big break on an American TV show called "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts" (kind of a 1950s version of today's "American Idol") and that got them a US recording contract. Among their biggest hits were "Little Darlin'" and "The Stroll" (both from 1957). They performed on a number of TV shows, including Dick Clark's original "American Bandstand." As far as I know, their original lead singer, Dave Somerville, is the band's only surviving member; he still lives in Ontario, Canada.
