That number is inaccurate and while it was a bloody pair of battles for no solid or obvious reason (UN forces withdrew to the permanent battle lines and a ceasefire was declared three weeks later) either for strategic or tactical advantage. ROK losses were 15 killed and 120 wounded and US losses were 243 killed and about 900 wounded, the vast majority of the UN troops were unscathed. Pork Chop Hill is more Hollywood than military history although Chinese casualties exceeded five thousand and two Medals of Honor (Posthumous) were awarded.
The battle was bad for both sides and thousands were killed. The Chinese won, and the hill became part of the demilitarized zone.

The Battle of Pork Chop Hill in 1953 was a series of battles between US and Chinese/Korean forces which were regarded as dubious inasmuch that the hills had little , if any , value strategically and tactically . The battle represented the futility of the war and the struggle between opposing forces while an armistice was being negotiated .

Hamburger Hill. Officially it is know as the Battle of Hill 937, The soldiers who fought it named it hamburger hill, a joking reference to the Battle of Pork Chop hill fought during the Korean war, because both battles had little to no strategic or tactical value.
