Why is slavery a debate?
Slavery was a debate because prior to the musings of the natural rights philosophers (John Locke, Hobbes...) people did not believe it was morally wrong to own another human being. But after people began questioning their social status, and writers began to explore the concept of equality...slavery began to be questioned as well.

Where did slavery began?
Slavery has been around for thousands of years. Slaves were seen as loot or money just as gold. The first recorded instances of slavery date back to 1760 BC, as written in the Code of Hammurabi, a Babylonian record of law. Unfortunately, slavery seems to have began with civilization. There isn't much evidence of slavery in hunter-gatherer societies, however.
How did literature aid the antislavery movement?
