Michelangelo contributed to most of the design for the St. Peters basilica, although the old St. Peters basilica was created during Constantine's power. After many designs that where presented including Bramantes and Raphael, it was Michelangelo's design that we view today.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe original St. Peter's Basilica was built by the Emperor, Constantine. It was decided to rebuild it in the 16th century, under Pope Julius II - remember that wa when Martin Luther got so out of sorts, because of the indulgences that were being sold in Germany.

Every pope from Julian II through Pope Pius V, who completed it, worked on it.
