∙ 13y agoThe first religious sect to use catacombs were the followers of the sun god, Mithras, whom they always worshipped under the ground. As Mithraism began to decline in the second century, Christianity was able to take over the Mithraic catacombs, where they began to bury their dead, some say as an intentional affront to Mithraism. The use by Christians of catacombs for burial chambers continued for some centuries.

∙ 12y agoThe catacombs are disused stone quarries. They were dug to provide building materials between the 12th and 19th centuries. Some of these quarries were filled with bones from the Cimetière des Innocents at the end of the 18th century.
